PLANTHROPOLAB, LE BIÔME
Le Planthropolab (PAL ou PALab) est d’abord et avant tout une instance de rencontre à l’instar du végétal, une sorte d’arbre à palabres qui réunit autour de son ombrage une scène anthropologique performative, artistique et narrative. Il constitue un biôme, un espace de vivants où humains et plantes s’entrelacent pour la création d’un corps de travail théorique, pratique et spéculatif. Prenant son enracinement au sein des études graduées en anthropologie de l’École d’études sociologiques et anthropologiques (ÉÉSA) de l’Université d’Ottawa, le lab est une sorte de mycelium collaboratif où les idées et la recherche foisonnent et peuvent prendre de l’expansion vers une symbiose, un maillage, de végétalités et de vitalités.
On voit ici trois terrains principaux d’enquête à travers lequel le végétal enracine, élance et oxygène ce projet florissant en étendue changeante. Premièrement, il s’agit d’explorer un éventail de thématiques contemporaines à l’orée du « tournant des plantes » récent en sciences humaines, en passant par la phénoménologie, l’onthos du végétal, la magification et la reconnaissance des puissances affectives, médicinales et mythiques associées aux plantes, partout où cela puisse émerger. Deuxièmement, en vertu de cet entrelacement avec le végétal, le Planthropolab permet d’éclore d’autres mondes possibles et d’autres devenirs potentiels, tout en hébergeant des biocénoses variées (tant académiques que non académiques). Ce rhizome relationnel divers est aussi un ancrage aux étoiles, une atmosphère propice au partage, à l’imaginaire et à la spéculation de phyto-futurs et phyto-présents possibles et probables, de planthropo-biômes post-naturels et par-delà tout essentialisme fixe. Et dernièrement, sous cette serre cosmogonique co-constituée par le lab, celui-ci cherche à promouvoir et à encourager la recherche expérimentale et les approches et les terrains ouverts aux esprits verdoyants, et ce à notre époque où plusieurs crises écologiques s’agencent pour former ce qu’on connaît aujourd’hui sous le nom d’anthropocène, — terme toujours à décomposer et à recomposer à partir d’un positionnement autre qu’exclusivement humain, soit celui des plantes ou dans l’entre-deux de l’humain, de la plante et d’autres vivants/existants.
Ici, les plantes ne sont pas conçues en tant qu’objets d’étude ou d’entités discrètes, mais comme des médiums vitaux se prêtant à la génération de puissances, épistémologies, transmutations… !
PLANTHROPOLAB, THE BIOME
Planthropolab (PAL or PALab) is first and foremost an instance of encounters inspired by the vegetal, a sort of palaver tree offering shade and a stage for anthropological performance, art and storytelling. It constitutes a biome, a living space in which humans and plants intertwine to create a theoretical, practical, and speculative body of work. Anchored in graduate studies in anthropology of the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies (SSAS) of the University of Ottawa, this lab offers a mycelial kind of collaboration, and one in which ideas and research might expand toward a symbiosis, an interweaving, of vegetalities and vitalities.
Here we see three main terrains of inquiry within which the vegetal offers roots and oxygen to the ever-shifting growth of this project. Firstly, we explore a range of contemporary themes which emerge from the “vegetal turn”, including phenomenology, the onthos of plants, as well as the affective, medicinal and mythical powers with which vegetal beings are associated, wherever they may grow. Second, by virtue of these vegetal entanglements, Planthropolab creates space in which other possible worlds and potential futures might nourish various communities, or biocenoses, (whether academic or otherwise). Seen then as a rhizome, the relationality of plants offers and anchor to the cosmos, ushering us toward an atmosphere conducive to exchange, to the sheltering, and dreaming up of phyto-futures and phyto-presents, moving us away from the trappings of fixed essentialism. Finally, in the warm hothouse of this co-constituted cosmogeny, we seek, promote, and encourage experimental research approaches, methods, and terrains of inquiry open to the chlorophyllic among us. In this time of perpetual ecological crisis -now dubbed the Anthropocene- we welcome the decomposition of the human exceptionalism implied by “anthropos”, as well as its variously recomposed alternatives, whether they centre plants, or that which emerges between the human, the vegetal and other living beings.
Here, plants are not conceived as objects of study, nor discrete entities, but as vital mediums, gesturing toward epistemologies, and transmutations.
QUI SOMMES-NOUS? LES BIÔCÉNOSES PARTAGÉES
La prise de forme de ce projet a eu lieu sous les constrictions de la pandémie, soit en mode online et paradoxalement en automne, alors que la luxuriance végétale tournait en tonalités écarlates, orange, jaunâtres. C’était donc le départ d’une instance d’hibernation pour des fleurissements à venir. L’objectif initial est celui de créer un espace de réflexion en ouverture aux chercheurs, aux professeurs et aux étudiants intéressé.e.s aux questions reliées aux plantes et aux vivants envoûtés dans les devenirs végétaux.
Le lab entrelace également des vitalités disciplinaires autres qu’anthropologiques, des plateformes autres que celles exclusivement virtuelles. Il s’agit de créer et de faire résonner tout un ensemble de bancs enchevêtrés sur plusieurs registres et langages théoriques, artistiques, pratiques et esthétiques, afin de mieux saisir tous les processus sociogéographiques, naturels/culturels, écologiques et politiques à la croisée des mondes contemporains. Nous entendons ici que les plantes constituent des mondes ou font en sorte que ceux-ci prennent corps, voire en dépassant ceux-ci et en générant des nouvelles épaisseurs ou canopées de complexité. C’est ce déploiement vital de génération de mondes que le lab cherche à explorer et à dénouer en équipée, et ce à travers des ateliers, des conférences et des expositions multimédia.
WHO ARE WE? SHARED BIOCENOSES.
This project took shape amid the contractions of the Covid-19 pandemic, through the necessity of virtual platforms, and paradoxically in autumn, as green luxuriance transformed itself into scarlet, orange, and yellow. So began this hibernation dream, gesturing to future flowerings. Here we fashioned a space for reflection, open to researchers, professors and students drawn to the vegetal.
This lab is open to that which lies beyond the disciplinary confines of anthropology, gesturing toward other disciplines and vitalities, and similarly, beyond virtual platforms. We strive in this way to find resonance between various interwoven registers, whether they be theoretical, artistic, practical and aesthetic. In this way we might better understand the sociogeographical, natural/cultural, ecological and political processes that make up the crossroads of contemporary worlds. In this view, plants too are world makers, offering up a richness of depth and complexity; it is this vital force, this kind of vegetal world making, that this lab seeks to inhabit and explore through workshops, conferences and multimedia exhibitions.
